FAQs

These are questions that are commonly asked about my travels...

Do you normally travel on your own?
Yes.

Isn't that dangerous?
Not any more dangerous than driving on the 405.

I research the places before I go, look up travel warnings, and exercise common sense. I have not run into to any major troubles such as getting my passport or wallet stolen while being alone in another country.

I can never travel alone. I'm scared that I'll get bored with no one to talk to.
I would too if I had no one else around me. The surprising truth is I'm actually never alone because I stay in hostels. It's also easier to make friends while traveling because fellow travelers are never busy to hang out.

But traveling is so expensive. How do you get away with it?
The most expensive thing is the airfare. But once I take care of that, I typically stay at hostels or family-run guesthouses. Never anything above a 2 star hotel, and absolutely no all-inclusive resorts. I try to eat street food instead of fancy restaurants if available.

How do you find the time to travel?
Since I'm on an academic schedule, I get seasonal vacations that enable me to travel for weeks.

Do you work?
Yes. I currently work 2 jobs on top of going to school full time. I have been able to make it work with some careful planning. In the past I have juggled multiple jobs that don't have much going on in summer. But my current job will not let me get away with taking an entire summer off. Therefore I do quick camping trips that aren't too far away.
